The Work

Dalissa and I will be giving free conversational English lessons using the Bible to a predominantly Buddhist community in Bangkok, Thailand.  If you are unfamiliar as to where Thailand is, please allow me to provide you with some information: Thailand Fact Sheet

Thailand is located in southeast Asia, in between Burma and Cambodia, south of China and North of Malaysia.  Its capital is Bangkok, which boasts a record for the "City with the Longest Name." Bangkok is a city of roughly 10 Million people, and the country as a whole is 95% Buddhist.  This is not the same type of Buddhism that you will find in China (Chinese Buddhism), though.  Commonly known as Thai Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism is a belief in the teachings of Buddha mixed with a myriad of Thai mythology and folklore.  Buddhism at its core is a belief in a peaceful existence that is in harmony with everything that surrounds a person.  There are lists and lists of principles and practices, which start in a belief of karma: you receive what you give.  I will have more to say on Buddhism in a following post.

We already have our Christian friends at the Somprasong 4 Church of Christ in Bangkok advertising our program and starting to put together our student base.  Our students, who will already have a working knowledge of the English language, will be provided an opportunity to practice their language development in a conversational environment with native English speakers for free.  More importantly they will be provided an opportunity to find a more perfect way. (Psalms 18:32)

Day 1

I am setting up this weblog so that our friends, family, and supporters can keep up with us as we do the Lord's work in Bangkok, Thailand.  I hope to keep this as current as I am able.  I will be posting pictures of about travels, students, Christians, and general interesting things that I come across.  Along with the pictures of our students, I hope to also have profiles of each of our readers so that our supporters can pray with us for each student by name.  That's all for now,
